A Family Home: Basement Waterproofing and Full Conversion – Guildford

Client: Domestic Homeowner – Basement Waterproofing Guildford

Brief: To renovate an existing damp cellar to usable family room

Following contact from the homeowner and initial surveys into the ongoing dampness that had made their residential cellar unusable, we were tasked with converting the space into a finished family media room, kitchenette and WC.  As part of the initial brief, the plan was to also improve the lighting from the small existing window and lower the level to improve head height – without the need for complete, disruptive and expensive foundation underpinning.

As such, we worked with a local structural engineer and the local authority building control to excavate, lower the existing level to increase head height and install an innovative new concrete floor slab and install a new light well / staircase structure that gave access to the rear garden – improving the flow of the space.

Once the structural work was realised, we installed a fully guaranteed Type C Cavity drain membrane waterproofing system to act as the internal damp proofing as part of achieving a Grade 3 habitable space as defined by the British Standard BS8102.

From there, bespoke finishing linings were installed to help tie the cellar space in with the rest of the property.  Working closely with the homeowners from the outset was integral to the success of this project and by using our knowledge of structures and our waterproofing expertise, we developed a fantastic scheme to make the most of the existing layout, install some new clean and modern details and convert the space to a now cherished and very used family media space.
