Waterproofing and Concrete Protection for Harris Aspire Academy, South Norwood
Contractor: Galliford Try
Products Used: Fosroc
As part of the relocation and transformation of the former South Norwood police station into the new Harris Aspire Academy, Advanced Preservations was appointed to deliver a waterproofing and concrete protection package within the site’s existing basement structure.
Working as an approved Fosroc Waterproof Alliance member, we partnered with Galliford Try to provide a specification-led solution that ensured long-term protection and durability for the newly repurposed educational facility.
Understanding the Requirements
The redevelopment project involved converting the original police station into a modern sixth-form college. As part of this, the basement needed to be made suitable for long-term, everyday use in an environment intended for students and staff.
This included addressing existing structural wear in the concrete substrate and delivering a BS8102-compliant waterproofing system suitable for a habitable Grade 3 environment. The work had to be delivered efficiently within the wider construction programme and in close coordination with other site teams.
Delivering the Waterproofing and Repair Solution
Advanced Preservations carried out a package of works that combined concrete repair and corrosion protection coatings with a targeted waterproofing strategy. Construction joints were treated using Fosroc waterproofing systems, ensuring that vulnerable details were sealed to prevent future ingress.
To complete the package, we installed a Type C cavity drain membrane system throughout the basement area. This system ensures water that penetrates the structure is redirected to designated drainage points, maintaining a dry and stable internal environment suitable for future occupation.
Our team worked closely with Fosroc throughout the project, ensuring that all materials were installed in line with manufacturer guidance and Waterproof Alliance standards.
The Outcome: A Protected Learning Environment
Today, the site in Oliver Grove, South Norwood, is home to the Harris Aspire Academy’s sixth-form provision. The basement now benefits from full structural protection and a watertight internal environment, contributing to a safe, welcoming, and modern educational facility.
This project demonstrates how well-executed concrete protection and waterproofing can extend the usable life of an existing structure, enabling it to serve a new purpose while maintaining the integrity and performance of the building.
